Starting and Regulating Resistors

Starting resistors, as the name suggests, are used to limit the current flow during the start of various types of electric motors.The resistance provided by the armature in an electric motor is quite low and hence a large current flows through them during startup. Starting resistors are connected in series with these motors and are gradually disconnected once the motor reaches an optimal speed. It is important to note that the resistance of the starting resistors will have to be individually tuned for every type of device it is intended to protect.

Since the voltage drop and hence the current flowing through a circuit can be controlled using these variable resistors, they are also used as regulating resistors where they control the amount of current flowing through an electric circuit.
